The first of at least 50 skywalks planned for Mumbai was inaugurated on Tuesday by the Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. The one-and-a-half kilometre long and four-metre wide walkway would allow people to walk across from Kalanagar in Bandra east to the railway station used by about five lakh commuters every day.

"We have many more planned in VT, Thane etc. Built at an expense of 13 crore rupees, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority will now transfer the maintenance to a private body," says Ratnakar Gaikwad, MMRDA Commissioner.

Such walkaways it is said will reduce the number of accidents and encourage people to walk while reducing congestion on the streets.
